Does air embolism occur this way?
Does air embolism occur this way?please only doctors need to reply!?
I want to know if air embolism occurs when person is stabbed in neck and jugular vein is opened.while person is in upright position air is then sucked into or out of the jugular vein ? from which it will move to the heart and results in death due to obstruction of the pulmonary artery?is it that the blood moves out of or into the jugular vein?and is this only relating to venous air embolism?

In case of a stab wound to the neck, air will be sucked INTO the jugular veins due to a negative pressure, from where it enters the right heart and then the pulmonary arteries. the bubble is churned up there, and aggregates of fibrin etc are formed, leading to death. in case of a patent foramen ovale or AV septal defect in the heart, the air can reach the brain. It is also possible that the air may be sucked into the dural venous sinuses directly.
This mechanism holds true in other types of embolism as well, in general.
