I am doing a project and I need to construct a roman shoe company. I need basic price info…
I have a book on Pompeii which uses evidence from the city’s excavations to give prices from the early empire. Although it doesn’t include shoes, you could creatively calculate a price. Looking at the prices below, maybe put a selling price of 7 – 8 Sesterces per pair in your business plan. Where designs are more fashionable, or have expensive or popular color dyes, you could charge more.
The cost of raw materials for your shoes would probably be quite small, say 2 -3 Asses but you’d need to sell a lot of shoes to recover the cost of buying slaves and mules and feeding them before even paying yourself any money. Variable costs associated with labor will be your biggest costs. If you decide to locate your business in Pompeii, property was very cheap in the mid first century – so cheap that it was economic for people to buy houses, demolish them and turn them into commercial vegetable gardens. The city also had a good harbor with easy access to trade routes for exporting your products. Just make sure you move the business before the 79 AD eruption!

1 Sesterce = 4 Asses
1 Denier = 4 Sesterces

Tunic: 15 Sesterces
Washing a tunic: 1 denier (4 Sesterces)
Food (to feed your slaves / workers)
Large loaf of bread: 2 Sesterces
Wine amphora: 3 Asses (0.75 Sesterces)
Cheese: 1 – 2 Asses
1 pound of oil (for cooking / lamps) 4 Asses
1 Modius of wheat: 30 Asses (1 Modius = 14.3 pounds)
Plate: 1 As
Tools
Mule: 520 Sesterces (ancient equivalent of a truck!)
2 Slaves: 5048 Sesterces (most of your employees will be slaves)
Lamp: 1 As
Bucket: 9 Asses
Incense (to burn and ask the gods for good fortune): 1 As
