Would my size prevent me from getting a job as a PARAMEDIC?
Hello!
I am a sernior in high school, I am currently attending an EMT-Basic course for free through my high school. I have found so far that it has really sparked my intrest and I really like it and the idea of moving on to a EMT-Paramedic within the next 1.5-2 years.
But here the issue. I am 5’3 and am only 115 lbs. So as you can tel, im a petite, smaller framed female. I keep hearing that this job requires strength, and I am certain I dont have nearly as much as the 17 year old guys in my class or some of the larger frame girls.
Would an employer not hire me on an ambulance company because of my size and appearance of lack of strengh?
I was also wondering if maybe i could get a job in a hospital as an EMT-Basic or an EMT-Paramedic?
Paramedic school is like 5000 and i dont want to work hard and take the course, only to find no jobs once i graduate….
I totally understand your hesitation and can totally relate. I’m just under 5 feet tall, 96 pounds, and I am a paramedic. There are jobs are intercept paramedics that you can get where it requires virutally no lifting, however, you may need to have been a paramedic for several years before getting one of those jobs. Also in my area, you’re more likely to get a job as an intercept medic than in a hospital with little experience.
As for a regular paramedic job, many places have a lift test. For example, for my job, I was required to carry a 250 pound dummy up and down an irregularly long flight of stairs on a backboard and then again on a stair chair. If you can’t pass it, you don’t get hired. If you do, you will get hired. It sucks, I’m not going to lie. And every day I am faced with large patients. However, I’ve learned to cope really well with my size. I do work out, although that still doesn’t have much of an affect on my petite frame and skinny arms, but it still keeps me at an advantage.
There are patients that I am not able to lift, and it stinks. But I know my limitations, and I can work around them. For example, on scenes, the fire department is usually around and they are FANTASTIC and will give you a hand. If it’s just my partner and myself, little hints are lifting the stretcher twice to get it to loading height. I’m much shorter than you, so you may not have an issue, but I lift heavier patients up on the stretcher by lifting once with the top handle and then again with the bottom handle. I also ALWAYS take the handle side because I don’t have to lift as high, and there is no doubt my partner will be taller than me, as I’m the shortest in the company. Getting the patient into the ambulance isn’t usually an issue when it’s at loading height. Another issue can be if I cannot lift the stretcher to loading height. I park my amublance to a curb, and lift on the head end of the stretcher with my partner, and we can usually get in into the ambulance that way. Curbs are great because they give you extra height.
These are just some little tips for lifting being smaller. But I will tell you that your height is not short for what needs to be done. Your weight shouldn’t really be an issue, either. You don’t sound like you’re very petite, so that’s good. But you need strength. I can lift what girls your size can’t. I’ve seen some women try our lift test two or three times that are larger than me, and they can’t do it. It’s a lot of body mechanics. But as an EMT, you’ll learn your capabilities, and you should have your EMT for 2 years before you begin medic school. You’ll be at a great disadvantage if you don’t.
