Lake Turkana Hosts 22,000 Crocodiles
Lake Turkana is one of the biggest Kenya lakes. It is located well off the beaten track in north Kenya and is highly recommended for those that would like to experience its incredible beauty and one of the most remote regions of Kenya.
It is a literal oasis in a region that is characterized by arid conditions. Areas further away from the lake often experience serious drought and famine, necessitating food aid. But this desert lake is much visited for its uniqueness.
First, with an area of 9280 sq km (3,600 sq miles), it is simply the biggest desert lake in the world. Although its basin straddles the Kenya-Ethiopia border, the lake itself is completely located within Kenya.
Although it’s been christened the “Jade Sea” due to its beautiful turquoise alkaline waters, the lake is, in reality known to swiftly change its colours . Therefore it can change from green to blue or grey in a moment.
The lake is fittingly regarded by archeologists to be “the cradle of mankind.” This is because skull and artefact excavations have proved that the area was occupied by pre-historic people. Actually it is believed that our ancestors occupied the area as early as 20 million years ago.
Lake Turkana is thought to be the biggest crocodile habitat in the world. Estimates put the lake’s Nile crocodile population at over 20,000. And the Turkana crocodiles are said to be clearly larger than those in the other Kenya lakes. So if you’d like to view these fierce cousins of the alligator, make a date with the Jade Sea.
An unlikely bonus for visiting Lake Turkana is the opportunity to take in the stunning landscapes that encircle the water body. These include everything from islands, lava beds and extinct volcanoes to the Suguta valley which has rejected human conquering.
