Do I cut back mums now in July or wait?

I have hardy mums that came back from last fall (some didn’t) I’ve been told to deadhead the bulbs, and others say to cut them back to ground level so they will be bigger & fuller in the fall. Last time I cut them back to the ground, well, that’s what i got! Which is it?

You should pinch the buds earlier in the season, but should stop pinching them back early in July. Some say you can pinch small flowered types up to Aug. 5th.

These sites recommend:
“Start pinching them back shortly after they come up next spring, and repeat at least twice before the Fourth of July. Pinching after the Fourth of July can delay flowering until it is too cold, then the flowers may be spoiled by a heavy frost.”

“Large flowered types should not be pinched after July 5th. Small flowered types can be pinched up to Aug. 5th. An earlier pinch date will be necessary for September blooming types. Large flowered types will only reach their maximum size if ( you remove) all but the largest center bud in a terminal bud cluster when bud clusters are still very small. “:

I have a beautiful dark red mum blooming now (that I had pinched back earlier) & it looks perfect. I can enjoy the show now & won’t feel as bad (as I had in the past)…when the snow comes …ending the show of flowers in my zone 5.
