Hiking Sport
It is December 21, 2009, just few days before Christmas and I need to get out of the house. I’m blessed because the Pattee Canyon trailhead is a short 8-minute drive from my front door step. It’s a cool 36 degrees but I know the trails will be icy so grab my hiking boots and strap on my new anti-slip boot things.
Pattee Canyon is located at the South end of Missoula Montana, about 10 miles from the University of Montana campus. It has three parking areas each at different elevations. It also has a picnic area, camp ground and Folf course if you’re so inclined. The trails are open all year round and even on the coldest day you will find several die-hard hikers traversing the beautiful landscape.
I decide to start my journey on the lower trailhead termed ‘Crazy Canyon’. Before I take off I have to make a point to drop all the stress of the day and just “be” in nature. The trail takes me straight up the mountainside with very little switch-back action. It is super icy, but my non-slip straps are proving to be a good investment, no slipping what so ever.
At the peak of my hike I come across an old rotted tree stump with a single white egg sitting atop some of the dried remains. At first I think it might have fallen from a nest, but on close examination it is an uncracked chicken’s egg…weird. I leave it be. There must be a story behind this strange phenomenon, but I don’t want to ruin my hike with too much mind activity.
I take a different trail on the decent. I notice how it’s easy to rush on the way down so I have to keep myself in check. I do this by bringing attention to the crisp clean air and letting the stillness of nature become infused with my being. I know that sounds a little…mystical, but then again that’s what I’ve come to expect with my hikes at Pattee Canyon.
