Shoes And Socks- The Teacher’s Requirement
The first time that I wore shoes and socks was during my preliminary days in Grade 1 at the central school in Socorro, Surigao del Norte, Philippines way back in 1972. It turned out that what I wore were not just ordinary socks, but thigh high socks being remedied as knee socks selected from a pile of mens socks stacked inside the cabinet of my classmate’s house.
It was a Monday afternoon that our teacher, Mrs. Curios, announced to the class that our school will be holding a sports day by the next Monday. Further, we were told to wear shoes and socks during the parade and in our class calisthenics presentation.
Shoes And Socks- The Difficulty To Have Them
Upon returning home in the late afternoon of that day, I gladly told my mother about our upcoming sports event and expressed to her my eagerness to wear shoes and socks as I have had not tried to wear shoes, nor boys socks, in my early island life. Then, I asked her if I can have a pair of shoes and socks as required by the teacher. Subsequently, after kissing me on the forehead and embracing me tightly, she explained that the income of my father from lumber-sawing were not even enough for our food consumption. Nevertheless, she assured me to borrow a pair of shoes and socks from the Socorro teachers who had kids as small as me.
I woke up early in the morning of Monday to prepare for the scheduled sports affair. As I went out of our room, I had seen my teary-eyed mother waiting for me. Afterward, with a tight embrace she said: “My son, how I wished you could wear your required shoes and socks today. Nevertheless, all the teachers that I approached had declined to lend their son’s shoes and socks as they themselves would also use it.” Subsequently, after wiping my mother’s tears with my bare hands, I told her: “Don’t you worry Nanay, I will just request my teacher to allow me to attend the parade and calisthenics on my slippers.”
Shoes And Socks- I First Wore Them By Accident
On my way towards the town square, I met my classmate Jerry Jualo in the street. Candidly, I felt envious upon seeing him wearing a pair of shoes and socks. At that time, I asked him if there were spare shoes and socks left in their house for me to wear on. Gladly, he invited me to their house to see if we can find one for me.
Scouring at their cabinet, we found a pair of shoes belonging to his father. Then, in our search for a pair of socks, we found many woolen as well as cotton socks in the mens socks corner of their cabinet.
The woolen socks we selected turned out to be so long for me so that, when I wore them, they looked like thigh high socks. Nonetheless, we found a remedy by placing the rubber band-wrapped garter of the socks right below my knees thereby effectively converting them into knee socks and utilized the lower portion of the thigh high socks as shoe fillers.
As I stood up, I found it hard to lift my foot without leaving the shoes behind. Hence, we got another pair of thigh high socks and used them as additional fillers. Thereafter, I slowly walked along the streets with a revised walking style- that of dragging my feet instead of lifting them, with my left hand holding on to the street side fences while Jerry was holding my right hand.
It was on that very awkward position that the parading pupils and students had passed us by with each and every one of them sporting a wide smile upon seeing me. Then Ingko Bonie, my beloved elder brother, came to my rescue. He right away lifted me towards his shoulders and, as my feet started hanging from the ground and the shoes remained on the soil, the filler thigh high socks were slowly exposed resembling that of intestines being extracted out of the chicken’s vent.
Thus, my first time wearing a pair of shoes and socks turned out to be a disaster!
Edelito C. Sangco is an islander gifted more with intra-personal intelligence preferring to work silently with or without supervision. Nevertheless, his work exposure and educational background have contributed much to the advancement of his inter-personal intelligence.
